This is a thesis project completed at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program in the Spring of 2013. See the presentation video for more background.

Kinograph is an open source project that makes film digitization affordable and scaleable. Using components available on the internet, a few 3D printed parts, and a consumer level camera, the machine digitizes 35mm, 16mm or 8mm film at high definition resolutions with sound.

Kinograph uses software to stabilize a series of captured images (Processing + OpenCV) and extract optical sound (AEO Sound).

A full website with more details will launch soon at http://kinograph.cc. Until then, please contact me with any questions: matthewepler@gmail.com.

The ReCode Project is a community-driven effort to preserve computer art by translating it into a modern programming language (Processing). Every translated work will be available to the public and contemporary artists to learn from, share, and build on.

The focus of the ReCode Project is three-fold:

1. Bring historic works of computer art back into the public eye.

2. Make it accessible and useable.

3. Save the code.

Processing has been chosen as the language of choice because of its ubiquitous presence in educational environments, accessibility to experienced coders, and because its a well-documented open source platform with a large community of developers.

This is an ongoing project started in late Fall, 2012. If you are interested in assisting or getting involved, please contact me at the email address listed in the Contact/Bio section.

How sweet were women on Mitt Romney? How sour were Catholics on Obama?

"Sweet on You" puts voter approval on a scale from sweet to sour. Each category of the Gallup polls has its own set of lollipops, red for the Republican party and blue for the Democratic party. If a category of voters is particularly fond of the Republican candidate, for example, the red lollipop will be very sweet, and the blue very sour. If they are undecided, they will both taste very similar.

This project is part of an ongoing series of works investigating physical representations of data that engage the senses.

The ITP Logo system is a case study
for a generative logo platform.

Built in Processing, the platform allows the user to control a basic shape and then use it as a generative drawing tool capable of outputting thousands of variations, each unique.

The color systems, base shape, and controls are all customizable. The colors and number of corners/points in the shape are meant to reflect the different elements of an organization. These could be locations, departments, even people.

The system creates a consistant logo that is flexible and customizable to fit the needs of any organization that is constantly changing and evolving.
